DIY Computer Upgrades
Many of us have a tower P.C sitting in the house somewhere. It could be used occasionally for web surfing or writing the odd homework piece, but it is in general neglected due to its age and the fact that every member of the family now has access to a smartphone, laptop netbook or tablet PC.
But if you like viewing things on the large screen, and would like to spruce it up a bit, here are some handy do-it-yourself IT support tips that will help speed up the old bird.
Hard disk
The cost of PC storage always gets less expensive over time. An older computer would have include a smaller drive as it might have been a touch more pricey back then. For example, when gb. (1,000 megabytes) drives initially came out, they cost 300. For that price today you would be able to get a terabyte (1,000 gbs.) drive. Should you need more room to store music, pictures and movies, then consider getting an external drive. It’s a cheap way in increasing storage and it will not cost a fortune.
RAM
Now this may sound scary, but don’t worry, it is easy to do. If your PC has less than 2GB of RAM (which you can extremely quickly check by right clicking My Computer and selecting properties), then it is definitely worth purchasing 4GB pair (2 x 2GB sticks) and upgrading your computer. They’re cheap enough to get, and sites such as Cosair will help you choose the right RAM for your machine.
To swap them, power down your machine and unplug it from the wall socket. Now remove the case, and locate the RAM on the motherboard. Once spotted, take away the old RAM by pulling the tabs away from the RAM. This should make them pop out. Now insert the new RAM, lining up the holes on the base of the RAM with the holes on the motherboard. Take care not to touch the gold plated parts too much either. Once in, press the plastic tabs back in place and you are done! Shouldn’t take you more than 10 minutes, and you should notice a much smoother computing experience.
